General FAQ - OBC

Are the Goliath Outer Burial Containers considered a vault or outer burial container?

They are both a vault and an outer burial container (“OBC”), as a vault of any size for burial purposes is considered an Outer Burial Container. It is designed to protect the casket and preserve the integrity of the gravesite.

Does Vandor/Starmark manufacture the unit?

The Goliath Outer Burial Container is manufactured by Polyguard and Co. (“Polyguard”), North America’s largest polymer burial vault and outer burial container manufacturer.

My vault supplier says that plastic vaults pop out of the ground. Is this true?

When properly installed and interred, the Goliath Outer Burial Container remains securely in place. The unit is designed with burial-specific dimensions and weight distribution, and it performs reliably when installed according to standard cemetery practices. Issues with vaults surfacing typically stem from improper installation or burial in saturated, unprepared ground—not from the material itself.

Does the Goliath Outer Burial Container come with a warranty against material and workmanship?

Yes! Polyguard provides a “100-Year Product Warranty” for its Outer Burial Container products. Subject to certain conditions, Polyguard will replace a product with a vault of similar value, and cover certain costs incurred resulting from manufacturing defects in a Polyguard product.

Is the Goliath Outer Burial Container warranted to resist the entrance of gravesite elements?

The Goliath Outer Burial Container’s primary purpose is to protect the casket from the weight of the earth. It is not guaranteed to resist the entry of gravesite elements.

Can butyl tape or mastic sealant be used to bond the top and sides of the Goliath Outer Burial Container to help prevent moisture entry?

Butyl tape or mastic can be applied to fasten the sides, top, and bottom of the Goliath Outer Burial Container. However, regardless of the application of tape or other products, the Goliath Outer Burial Container is not guaranteed to prevent the entry of outside elements, including water.

What is the best method for moving and handling a Goliath Outer Burial Container?

The Goliath Outer Burial Container is best moved using a forklift, backhoe or other heavy equipment along with straps. When using a backhoe or other heavy equipment along with lowering straps, the straps should be completely under and encircle the entire Goliath Outer Burial Container.

Each Goliath Outer Burial Container includes a set of durable biodegradable paper tubes. These tubes are designed for the straps to pass through, making strap removal easier after lowering.

Once I order the Goliath Outer Burial Container, who can do the opening and closing and the graveside service?

Contact your usual interment company or the cemetery where the interment will occur, as they may assist.

Can you ship the Goliath Outer Burial Container alone straight to my vault supplier?

Yes, additional charges may apply.

This is my first oversize body. How can I determine what size Goliath Casket and Outer Burial Container I need?

You can determine the casket and Outer Burial Container size by measuring the body at the place of “greatest width”, and torso height (while lying flat). Measuring twice is wise to ensure that you will only need to order Goliath products once.

The delivery costs seem high. What can be done to help make this more cost-effective?

In addition to the savings realized by purchasing a Goliath Casket enclosed in the Outer Burial Container, you can order additional frequently needed items from Starmark to be shipped with the casket and Outer Burial Container to reduce the overall dollar cost average per cubic foot. Such items could include: any mixture of Coverlets, any Brand of Rental Inserts, Transporters, Safeways, and Safewoods.

My usual vault company has refused to help at the cemetery. What can I do?

We recommend contacting the cemetery for assistance in this matter.

Can I bury the Goliath Oversized Casket without an outer burial container?

Most cemeteries require the use of an Outer Burial Container to prevent any casket of any size from being crushed by the weight of the earth or heavy equipment.

What are the fully assembled dimensions and weight of the Goliath Outer Burial Containers?

What testing is done during production to ensure quality?

Products are manufactured based on established product specifications. These specifications can be provided to you upon request. (Note that the specifications must be followed in post-delivery assembly of the product to preserve all warranties.) The nature of Polyguard’s structural injection molding of plastics helps ensure that all parts are manufactured exactly the same. If it is determined at any point in the manufacturing process that a product is out of spec (e.g., the mold cavity of any part of the Goliath Outer Burial Container is not completely filled during production), the defective part is removed and replaced with one that meets specifications.
